Data mining solves many kinds of business problems. Algebraically say, number of floops needed a simple query running on a snowflake should be fastest. This will provide a clearer understanding of the different routes to achieve data warehousing success and how to translate between the advice and rhetoric of the different approaches. Ideally, organizations need to borrow concepts and tactics from each approach to create environments that uniquely meets their needs. Though I do have a guess on the meaning: "Staging is used to store raw data for use by developers analysis and support " No, staying with the ETL "picture", staging is used to store and prepare data for the final load.

I think some of the confusion, originates in the concept "dimensional modeling". The database tracks the staleness of the dimensional objects, automatically keeps track of the deltas in the source tables, and automatically applies only the changed values during the refresh process. However, backfilling a data warehouse can be a highly disruptive process that delivers no ostensible value and therefore may never be funded. So, they can be closely related.

Anyway, feel free to change around whatever as necessary. Just don't call data warehousing the corporate memory. Some systems perform better with a star schema, some perform better with a snowflake schema. I will be back to enhance it dramatically, but in the mean time, don't think this is all there is to data warehousing!
